Kathleen Vanderbrook - Artist's Statement: Nest Series
Since 1990 I have been making hand made paper. The plants I gather (milkweed, bindweed, cattalis,
lichens and moss) for paper making are also the raw materials for nest building.
In 2006, in honor of the New Mexico Fiber Arts Trail, I wove pieces of wood together to create the large eagle nest
in my front yard. On a trip to Southern Arizona in 2007, I was fascinated with the bird nests in cactus plants. For
ten months I couldn't stop thinking about the nests. Then one morning, walking my dog, I discoverd some weathered
clover plants; by the time I arrived home I was holding my first small bird nest. Some wood from my collection added
stability and a framework. A small circular piece of my hand made paper made a fine interior. I haven't been able
to stop making nests since. Contact the artist: kathleen@lyric-arts.com
